Jenny Ellis Counselling

It can be hard to let yourself try something like counselling, to take the risk of looking at parts of yourself that feel vulnerable, and to allow someone else to see them too. I use the tag line “Allow Yourself” to encourage the part of you that wants to take that risk because, deep down, it knows that you matter.

I am a qualified counsellor with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling from Gloucestershire College, where I now also teach Counselling Skills and Theory at Level 2, 3 and Diploma Level, accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body.

Integrative Person Centered and Psychodynamic Counselling

I use Person Centered theory, which is about helping you grow towards your potential, and Psychodynamic theory, which is about understanding how your past may be directing things in your present. Both theories offer ways to understand yourself which can help you to make new and different choices. I work integratively, which means I pull in theory when and where it might help you based on what you share with me in our sessions.

As well as these theories, I focus on the relationship between us because this offers an opportunity to further understand yourself and how you relate to others and the world outside the counselling room. It also lets you experience what it might feel like for all parts of you to be accepted by someone. I do this by working in a warm and friendly way, without judgement. This can feel a bit weird at first, especially if a large part of you thinks that you don't deserve it. Sometimes we fill in the gaps with our own judgements and I will endeavour to help you identify and question these as part of our work together.

Areas that I specialise in are anxiety, self-harm, depression, and suicidal ideation. I also have an interest and experience in working with identity topics. These include, but are not restricted to, existential questions, gender and sexuality, and relationships, including non-monogamy, polyamory, and kink.

This interest has been underpinned by completing an accredited Certificate in Diversity Within Contemporary Relationships and experience working as a counsellor at Essential Space, a counselling agency committed to embracing inclusivity. As part of their Identity Space project, I provided gender, sexuality and diverse relationship LGBTQIA+ support.

I work in a way that is trauma informed, focusing on grounding techniques over talking about traumatic details, and am registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which means the way that I work is recognised as ethical and effective.

I offer 50 minute sessions, typically once a week, for £55, face to face in therapy rooms located in Cheltenham and Shurdington. I also offer remote working via the telephone or online via Teams.
